Natural Product Communications. 2018;13(2). doi:10.1177/1934578X1801300213)
In addition to its antic activity, Kalanchoe pinnata also have antidiabetic activity. (Agüero-Hernández AL, Rosales-López C, Herrera C, Vargas-Picado A, Muñoz R, Abdelnour-Esquivel A. Hypoglycemic Effect of Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam) Pers. Leaf Extract. Pharmacognosy Journal. 2020;12(3):557-561.).
- Jergon Sacha (Dracontium spruceanum)
Despite the antiviral, antivenin, cough suppressant, protease inhibitor (typically used for viral infections), and anti-inflammatory activities of jergón sacha as popularly known by traditional medicine, no single clinical study has been published on its actions. (The healing power of rainforest plants, Rain-Tree publishers, https://rain-tree.com/jergon.htm)
- Blackseed (Nigella sativa)
Black seed is potent in the treatment of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. (Michael J. Haas, Emad Naem, Sultan Almdallaleh, Arshag D. Mooradian, The effect of black seed (Nigella sativa) extract on lipid metabolism in HepG2 cells, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) – Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, Volume 1867, Issue 8, 2022, 159155, ISSN 1388-1981, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bbalip.2022.159155.
Pharmacological studies stated that N. sativa possesses antidiabetic, anti-c, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, neuro-protective, gastroprotective, immunomodulator, analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity. (Md Faruque Ahmad, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad, Syed Amir Ashraf, Hisham H. Saad, Shadma Wahab, Mohammed Idreesh Khan, M. Ali, Syam Mohan, Khalid Rehman Hakeem, Md Tanwir Athar, An updated knowledge of Black seed (Nigella sativa Linn.): Review of phytochemical constituents and pharmacological properties, Journal of Herbal Medicine, Volume 25, 2021, 100404, ISSN 2210-8033, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.hermed.2020.100404.
- Apricot Kernel Seed (Prunus armeniaca)
Research conducted using rats induced by dimethylnitrosamine has shown that apricot kernel can effectively improve and prevent liver fibrosis (Abdel-Rahman MK. Can apricot kernels fatty acids delay the atrophied hepatocytes from progression to fibrosis in dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver injury in rats? Lipids Health Dis. 2011 Jul 7; 10:114. doi: 10.1186/1476-511X-10-114.)
Apricot Kernel contains amygdalin (Laetrile) which some believed to have the potential of treating c https://www.c.gov/about-cka-Czerw, Justyna, Nowak, Agnieszka and Kuśmierz, Dariusz. “Effect of amygdalin on MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and T-47D breast c cells in the in vitro study” Postępy Higieny I Medycyny Doświadczalnej, vol.76, no.1, 2022, pp.132-142. https://doi.org/10.2478/ahem-2022-0013).
In a review, Amygdalin has been justified for its anti-activity and other biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-asthmatic, preventing lung and liver fibrosis, improving microcirculatory disturbance, and attenuating pancreatic fibrosis. (Ewa Jaszczak-Wilke, Żaneta Polkowska, Marek Koprowski, Krzysztof Owsianik, Alyson E. NOTE: The clinical evidence for the anti-c activity of amygdalin is not fully confirmed.
- Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa)
Research conducted on a male Wistar rat model of cshows that Cat’s claw exerts extensive anti-neoplastic effects against tumors. (Dreifuss AA, Bastos-Pereira AL, Fabossi IA, Lívero FAdR, Stolf AM, Alves de Souza CE, et al. (2013) Uncaria tomentosa Exerts Extensive Anti-Neoplastic Effects against the Walker-256 Tumour by Modulating Oxidative Stress and Not by Alkaloid Activity. PLoS ONE 8(2): e54618. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0054618).
Cat’s claw has been scientifically proven to express cytotoxicity against gastric and colon c cell lines (Navarro-Hoyos M, Lebrón-Aguilar R, Quintanilla-López JE, Cueva C, Hevia D, Quesada S, Azofeifa G, Moreno-Arribas MV, Monagas M, Bartolomé B. - Pau D’ Arco (Tabebuia spp)
Pau D’ Arco has been scientifically proven to attenuate inflammation due to macrophage infiltration. This is done by inhibition of COX-2 activity, suppression of iNOS and inflammatory cytokines (Ma S, Yada K, Lee H, Fukuda Y, Iida A, Suzuki K. Taheebo Polyphenols Attenuate Free Fatty Acid-Induced Inflammation in Murine and Human Macrophage Cell Lines As Inhibitor of Cyclooxygenase-2. Front Nutr. 2017 Dec 12;4:63. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2017.00063. Erratum in: Front Nutr. 2018 Jan 30;5:2. PMID: 29312947; PMCID: PMC5733013).
A study shows that pau d’arco activates the Nrf2-signalling pathway in the intestine via the analysis of the HMOX1 and NQO1 expression (Nrf2 target genes) after oral dosing in mice hence mediating the beneficial gastro-intestinal effects in models of colitis (Richter, Michelle & Winkel, Angelika & Schummer, Dietmar & Gerlitz, Martin & de Hoop, Meltsje & Brunner, Bodo & Glien, Maike & Schmoll, Dieter. (2014). Pau d’arco activates Nrf2-dependent gene expression via the MEK/ERK pathway. The Journal of toxicological sciences. 39. 353-61. 10.2131/jts.39.353).
